Offering the world’s first fully electronic watch in 1960, Accutron changed the way the world told time with the most accurate timekeeping mechanism ever created and the first personal timekeeping advancement seen in 300 years, thanks to the Swiss engineer Max Hetzel. Ruling the watch world then, its foundational technology became an integral component of America’s space program with its participation in 46 NASA missions.‌
Accutron watches were highly suitable for use in aerospace applications as they ran on electric power without a mainspring. The tuning fork mechanism and low inertia of certain critical components gave it good resistance to high G-loads and a better ability to withstand high temperatures without becoming inaccurate or otherwise malfunctioning. This led to Accutron movements being adopted as cockpit instrument panel timers on numerous satellite missions, starting with the Vanguard 1 in 1958.‌
Pilots in the X-15 rocket plane program, many of whom qualified for astronaut’s wings as they flew high enough to have been considered reaching the fringes of space, were the most known wearers of the Accutron Astronaut. The dial and hand layout of the Astronaut mirrored those in the cockpit.‌
The new 300-piece Limited Edition Astronaut takes its design inspiration from the 1968 Astronaut “T” featuring a distinctive day/night bezel.‌
In 1962, Bulova produced the Accutron Astronaut, a 214-based GMT timepiece with a 24-hour rotating bezel, secondary 24-hour hand and hack function. Originally made for high altitude CIA spy plane missions in conjunction with emerging NASA rocket technologies, it also found great commercial success.‌
The Astronaut is the only timepiece using the 214HN sub-caliber, widely considered to be the ultimate Accutron movement.‌
